During Domestic Violence Month events will be held to raise awareness of domestic violence and its impact on individuals, families and communities. Throughout the month people are encouraged to wear the purple ribbon. Purple symbolizes survivors who were hurt by physical and emotional abuse but still go on to thrive and live a life free of violence. On Thursday, October 24, 2019 wear purple for Domestic Violence Awareness Day.

Domestic violence affects all walks of life. Domestic violence covers a wide range of behaviors. In New Jersey there are 19 separate crimes that can constitute domestic violence, including harassment, assault and homicide. There is help available – if you feel that you have been a victim of domestic violence you can go to your local Superior Count and file a Temporary Restraining Order. If you are granted a Temporary Restraining Order the protections offered under it are immediate. A Final Restraining Order will be held, typically within a week or two.
