The short answer is yes. The more difficult question is – how much? The New Jersey Child Support Guidelines are intended to be used for children 18 and under. The child support guidelines are not necessarily appropriate when a child is over 18 and goes to college – especially if that child is living away at college. However, the guidelines might be appropriate if the child is living at home while attending college. Child support for children in college is a complicated issue. A larger concern for most families at that point is: How is college itself going to be paid for? In New Jersey divorced parents are expected to pay for their children’s college. Courts will order divorced parents to do so. Child support for children in college and the parties’ contribution toward college is often a fiercely negotiated part of litigant’s settlement agreements.
